With reference to your letter of the 30th. of November last, respecting the payment of duty on the
estate of the late Mrs. Janet Hansen, I um directed by Secretary 3ir E. Grey to inform you that he has care- fully considered Mesare. Arastrong and Company's let-: ter of the 29th. of November last, but that, in the circumstances, he does not see how it is possible to
help you in the matter.
The only duty which is under the control of the Home Government, i.c. duty which the Lords Commission ors of the Treasury could refund to the claimants, ig the sum puid in probate fees at Shanghai, for the dy paid at Hongkong has gone to swell the revenue of
colony and is in no way under the control of His
ty's Government in Great Britain.
Pooling as he does that it was the Shanghai
